Apparently the CEO of Curves for Women, a born-again Christian, "gives to pregnancy centers supported by Operation Save America, the anti-abortion group whose purpose, according to its Web site, 'unashamedly takes up the cause of preborn children in the name of Jesus Christ.'" So if you're pro-choice, I recommend changing health clubs, and letting the Curves folks know why.(I was mildly surprised when I read the article that the CEO was a man, by the way.) Of course, it’s entirely appropriate for the founders, owners, and operators of a business to express their values and beliefs in their work. It’s also appropriate for potential customers to express their own values and beliefs in their choice of where they spend their money. I just found this surprising enough that I thought some of y’all might be interested in hearing about it.
(In other news, I had a great time last night meeting purrfab to watch The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I really enjoyed. I felt like it was trying to be more allegorical and less literal than Memento — which I also enjoyed — but ended up coming off as more psychologically real, although of course they’re very different films. Anyway, I very much recommend it. Afterwards, dinner at the S&S, which I should go to more often.)
