Dancing

Me: on Ferris wheel 2012-09-09

I went contra dancing last night, for probably the first time in two or three years. When I first moved to the Boston area, I danced two or three nights a week, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve danced regularly. I think it's time to fix that.

I had originally planned to go because hawkegirl and cos were going to be there, but they ended up not making it. But I had also made plans with Dreaming to go, and surrealestate ended up coming as well. I had a wonderful time!

This was at the Thursday VFW dance in Cambridge. It was interesting going back there after such a long gap. I think the average age has gone down a bit, although all ages from 8 to 80 were represented. The caller used “ladies” and “gents” when calling, but made it clear as she was walking through the dances that anybody was welcome to play any part, and there were a few same-sex couples, including me and Dreaming for one dance. Yay! I hadn’t gotten to dance with him before. (It was also my first opportunity to dance with surrealestate; in fact, I don’t think she and I had ever been at the same dance before.)

Unfortunately, there were a few dances that weren’t walked through ad nauseam until everybody got them, and which were sufficiently elaborate in terms of people moving around that if not everybody knew exactly where they were supposed to be, the confusion would cascade. But there were also lots of dances that just flowed really well (actually, I think all of them would have flowed really well if all the dancers had them down), and I had lots of fun.

Definitely going back soon.

With pregnancy 'issues' right now, there is no dancing for me... :

Heh. I miss dancing a lot too, and this post reminded me. I don't have any "issues" with my pregnancy, but I'm guessing random dancers jostling my tummy would disturb me in ten seconds flat.

I forget exactly; were you the person who introduced me to contra dancing? I know it was somebody in our crowd.

I wonder what the New Haven contra dances are like these days.

And on another topic, when are you due?

Um, yes, I am going to be at BiCamp. Pardon my ignorance, lediva, but who are you? Your mention of being a current/recent Harvard undergraduate in your journal means you’re definitely not the same person as beetiger, but saying you might have introduced me to contra dancing means I must have known you in New Haven. Puzzled ’wabbit.

Oh, excellent, so you’ll be at BiCamp! It’ll be so fabulous to see you!

(Yes, I’ll definitely be there. Not 100% sure, but I don’t think I’ve missed one since they started.)

I was wondering if that might be the case, but I look forward to getting to dance with you eventually. I hope you will remember how much you liked contra dancing the next time you can go!

(And I did read your post about the bleeding and the possible causes, I just managed not to connect that strand of your life with any of the other strands of your life in a meaningful way, or I would have been surprised if you had shown up. I hope things are going well. Do you have an idea when/if you're going to have another ultrasound?)
