Two things
19th-Feb-2006 03:00 pm
Me: on Ferris wheel 2012-09-09
Thing the First: docorion and I finally got the moving pod cleared out today! Yay! Is very exciting. Now I just need to figure out what to do with all the stuff. Getting around in my bedroom and my office does not so much involve walking as looking around for a safe place that I can reach to put a foot.

Thing the Second: I was feeling somewhat experimental in the shower today. I’d been meaning to try this for quite a while, and I finally actually did it today:

So today is the first day I haven’t had a mustache since the summer between my junior and freshman years in college, i.e., since 1985. It’s kind of hard to see what it’s going to look like, because try as I might I couldn’t get rid of the 5-o’clock-shadow look where the mustache used to be, and because my beard and hair are very short now, so there isn’t much contrast. Anyway, if I decide to keep the shaved upper lip, I’ll probably go with a smaller but longer beard (sort of like chillguru’s) Or maybe I’ll skip the beard altogether, although I’m kind of attached to having some facial hair.

There are two reasons I wore the beard and mustache: I like them on other people, and I’m extremely lazy. (There were also two other reasons I originally grew them out in 1985 that aren’t so relevant any more: they made me look older, and they helped hide zits.) It remains to be seen how happy I am without the mustache, but I figured it was worth the experiment. (My short hair was originally an experiment, too.)

Comments welcome. Given how short my hair and beard are, it wouldn’t take long to grow back a wisp of a mustache to match the beard. :-)

I still remember your long hair fondly. Having seen both Norman and me, I guess you can figure out that I'm a "the more hair, the better" sort of person. :-)

Well, I’m also very vaguely considering growing my hair (on my head) out, too, so there’s an off chance you might get to see the long hair again. (Although it would take a long time to get down to my waist again.)

Thanks! Yeah, I’m thinking about the goatee.

I do have a beard in that picture; it’s just a really really short beard. That’s what I meant about low contrast between the beard (theoretically there, but barely visible) and the mustache (theoretically not there, but still visible).

Wow...that look looks so right that I couldn't momentarily remember what you looked like with the beard and mustache!

Same here.
19th-Feb-2006 07:49 pm (UTC)
Thanks! There is actually a smidgen of beard in the picture, just not much.

Very true. That looks great.

My mental image of people updates whenever I see them. So my first thought on seeing the picture was, "You used to have a mustache?!"
20th-Feb-2006 07:00 am (UTC)
well, first, i'm a big one for everyone has the right to do whatever they want, and that should be obvious. :)

that said.. i also have fond longer-haired memories of you. probably not waist-length, but i remember it being around shoulder length (?) and liking it a lot. but that's just me... i have had the experience lately of deciding that some people just look better with their hair guy-length-short. but those are pretty few and pretty far between...
20th-Feb-2006 07:02 am (UTC)
oh, i'm also a fan of facial hair, although not so much of goatees. you should do as you will...
20th-Feb-2006 12:58 pm (UTC)
Ooh... fun! :)
20th-Feb-2006 01:56 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I’ll count that as a vote for the bare upper lip. :-)
20th-Feb-2006 01:59 pm (UTC)
I like both. :) I've been wanting to shave my head again lately, though, so... I'm shaving vicariously. :)
20th-Feb-2006 01:37 pm (UTC)
Mm, shaved. I want to pet your head now...

I tend to be a largish fan of no or little facial hair, as it tends to get in the way of my lips. But this depends entirely upon my relationship to said person, and some people, of course, look extremely hot with facial hair.

Yay for experimentation!

Well, that sort of thing is exactly why I do it, so you should feel free to pet my head the next time you see me. (Actually, I sometimes pet my own head in the couple weeks after I’ve freshly shaved it. Headsturbation; it’s not just for breakfast anymore!

Yeah, Zeph saying that (although in her case, it was as much her nose as her lips) was what first planted the bug in my head, months ago.
[...] some people, of course, look extremely hot with facial hair.
Oh, my he’s a cutie! And much more so with the facial hair. Other than teensy little dust-jacket pictures, I never knew what he looked like.

You look completely and utterly unrecognizable, but very hot.

(This is not to say that you weren't ALREADY hot... you're now just a different kinda hot.)

I like the look especially because it makes your nose more of a central feature (ok, that just sounded stupid... um... it gives your nose more FOCUS, I guess), and you have a very, very pretty nose.
20th-Feb-2006 03:54 pm (UTC)
Thank you! A special kind of crazy needs a different kind of hot.

Now I feel like I need to draw a little face on the tip of my nose. :-) Maybe with teeny-tiny little glasses and a serious expression, so it looks like it has a lot of focus.

I think the nose being a central feature probably has a lot to do with the lack of glasses in that picture, as well as the lack of mustache. I like wearing contact lenses, but the particular kind I have now are very hard to manage. Need to make an appointment at the eye doctor’s...

(I have a similar reaction to your current default userpic: It’s very hot, but it looks very different from how I remember you looking in person.)

*laughs out loud and scares the cats*
Oy. I just... *shakes her head* I have nothing to say to that. You are goof and a half. (Delightfully so.)

I think the conditions under which it was taken (*cough*post-coital*cough*) give it a considerably more zenned-out look than I usually have. Plus, I don't usually look quite so naked.

Now I’m even happier with your userpic.

I'm so glad you cleared out the pod!

Also, I love the shaved upper lip.
21st-Feb-2006 11:36 am (UTC)
Thanks. I’m sort of leaning towards keeping it (and haven’t decided what to do about the beard yet). But I’ll be happier with it when it stops getting all irritated and inflamed when I shave. It clearly hasn’t gotten to that point yet. :-)

Do you still have the Aveeno hair thinning lotion?
21st-Feb-2006 01:03 pm (UTC)
Have, yes. Can find, probably not so much. But eventually I’ll probably uncover it.
