Flying away...

In just over eight hours, the cab comes to pick me up and take me to the airport to fly to Honolulu for a week with Tigris and Tom. I am so excited! This will be my first trip there since they moved to Honolulu from Kona (on the Big Island). They moved to Honolulu from the Big Island because they (like me) are city people to a large extent, and needed the social network that a city has to offer. (The Big Island is very rural — stunningly gorgeous, but not able to support the kinds of little communities that they enjoyed here, and that they’re enjoying in Honolulu.) So this is probably going to be a more social trip than my previous ones have been, more oriented to meeting their friends and getting to know their communities. That’s something I’m really looking forward to.

It’s also going to be shorter than my previous visits, which all have been two weeks long or so. That’s because when we made plans I didn’t know when they were going to be able to make it back here, and I didn’t want to have to wait until December or so to see them again, so I figured I’d split my vacation time up a bit more. It turns out they’re going to be here in August and again in October, so in retrospect it might have been better to do another two-week trip this time. But it certainly will be delightful, and I’m looking forward to visiting them again as soon as possible.

Among the fun things I’m going to be doing are attending a Pali Paths discussion and a HawaiiPAL barbecue. I also may be going scuba diving, which I’ve never done before! But of course, the thing I’m looking forward to most is just hanging out with Tigris and Tom and Hamlet. (For those of you considering living 5000 miles from your family, let me say that there are disadvantages. Sure makes it nice to see them when you can, though!)

Have I mentioned lately how excited I am?

(BTW, my default LJ picture, the one for this entry, was taken the last time I was in Honolulu with them.)
