In sickness and in health

People: me with plumtreeblossom May 2007
In sickness and in health

But lately, in more sickness than we’d either like.

So a couple months ago (after everybody else in my office had already had it), I got the flu. (Probably the Hamthrax, since it was too early for seasonal flu.) I had it especially bad for a week or so. plumtreeblossom picked it up from me but she got a very very mild version — she was basically inconvenienced for a couple days, but nothing beyond that.

As tends to be the case whenever either of us gets any kind of respiratory infection, we ended up with long lingering coughs. They’ve lasted much longer than normal, though — ordinarily my cough would be dry and occasional by now, but it doesn’t seem to have gotten much better (or worse) over the last three weeks. This stage, though, has hit plumtreeblossom much harder than me all along, and a couple days ago she took a serious turn for the worse.

Have I mentioned that tonight is opening night for the show we’re both in?

Anyway, she hasn’t been able to sleep lying down for a few days, and yesterday she sounded so bad on the phone that I persuaded her to go to the emergency room. I took a couple days off work (I’d already told work I was taking today off to take care of her and myself, but when we realized she needed to go to the hospital I left work and took a cab to meet her). My poor wuzzle.

Anyway, the folks at the ER were very nice, and diagnosed her with acute bronchitis, and gave her scrips for antibiotics, high-dose ibuprofen, and cough syrup with codeine. We went to Davis Square and waited quite a while to get the prescriptions filled, and went to her place, by which time I pretty much needed to turn around and go to the Somerville Theater for the dress rehearsal.

The awesome Foley coordinator had divvied up plumtreeblossom’s cues and we went over the script marking who would be doing them. (plumtreeblossom is Foley captain, i.e., the on-stage senior sound-effects person.) The rest of us on the Foley team managed fine, and as I told plumtreeblossom, the reason we managed fine is because she had done such a great job of teaching us and molding us into a team.

Unfortunately, the prescription cough syrup did nothing for plumtreeblossom, either in terms of suppressing her cough or in terms of helping her sleep. After several hours of misery, she switched back to over-the-counter stuff, which doesn’t do enough for her but at least does something. Sadly, she’s going to be missing opening night tonight. But she knows everyone understands and we all feel for her.

Besides being able to be with plumtreeblossom and help take care of her, part of my motivation in taking time off work was to be able to take care of me, by getting enough sleep despite late nights at the theater, and today that plan certainly seems to have been a good one. Lots of sleep has helped my own cough a bit. (Honestly, if plumtreeblossom were completely well, I might consider sitting out a performance in my current state. But given the complexity of the sound effects in some of the scenes, trying to do them down two people is not practical. And I’m sure in much better shape than she is.

I am now on the train on my way briefly back to Quincy to feed and water Chickenfinger and clean her litterbox, and pick up clean clothes (which I will probably have to first cause to be clean). Then back to the theater for opening night. I can’t wait, but I sure wish plumtreeblossom could be with us in person as well as in spirit.

As always, plumtreeblossom, I love you.

PS — Yes, I know I need to see a doctor too. Slightly complicated because I’ll be seeing a new doctor and there’s insurance stuff I have to do first. I’d hoped to squeeze that in yesterday or today, but haven’t managed, and plumtreeblossom’s needs are a lot more urgent than mine.

Oh no, I didn't realize it was that bad for you, too! I hope you can take tomorrow off and sleep. You're sick enough to take a sick day and I'm sure it'd make a world of difference for you.

I love you so much, wuzzle. I'm too sick to type more, but know that I'm with you onstage in my heart.

Feel better you two!

Remember, the best thing you can do for your immune system right now is to get as much rest and fluids as you can. Healthy diet is also good, but I don't need to tell you that.

Have fun with the play, I'm sure it'll be great!
